PID is proportional integrative derivative controller. It's linear regulator. PID is old but still used regulator, because is easy to set up it. Using of PID regulator is at most if is necessary to regulate changes made by errors, like load changes. PID is appropriate for regulating via regulating abberation, less for regulating on setted value.
